part 1: further into sargam

(sample clip) Here’s a really fun sargam exercise that Jai Uttal calls the “key to the magic kingdom.” It’s effect is to give your fingers and voice more fluency in navigating a scale. It’s also a vigorous workout in naming the notes with their sargam names, which is crucial preparation for using the sargam system to learn a kirtan song’s melody (as in the later “Playing a Kirtan” videos). Daniel also introduces finger transfers, used to play musical phrases that cover a wider range than the hand can otherwise reach.
