Rockin’ Rhythms: Jaya Ma Durga

(sample clip) Want to get funkier with your harmonium playing? Learn how to mix it up on the keyboard as you move through a kirtan song – in this case, Jai Uttal’s Jaya Ma Durga. Daniel takes this song through the steps, and then uses it as a diving board to launch into an ocean of funky rhythms. There are many ways to play the chords to a piece, and in this video Daniel goes over: simple sustained chords, anticipated chords, 3+3+2 rhythmic comping (playing of chords), 3+2+1+2 rhythmic comping, and up-beat comping. These styles can then be applied to any song you’re working on from the songsheets page.
